The expense of tuition and housing for college students has been rapidly increasing every year, as we all know. The price of textbooks, however, seems to have skyrocketed disproportionately. Having one kid in college and another on their way in a year, we have tried to cut back textbook expenses in any way possible. Purchasing a brand new book is usually out of the question, as the price for some can be a couple of hundred dollars! Though most new books average around $100.00, if you found out which books you needed early enough, a used book could be purchased at the college bookstore for almost half that price. The key here is finding out in enough time to beat out other scrambling students, as used books are hard to come by at the many campus bookstores. Also, many of these bookstores will let you return the book when you are finished for a partial refund, as long as it has remained in good condition.

Shopping around before purchasing your books, can be a real eye opener and may save you a lot of money. Just be sure to have all of the correct information before you start pricing textbooks, because a great bargain is worthless, if you have purchased the wrong book. Contacting your campus book store with your course information, should help you to obtain what text books are required for a particular class. Remember to ask for the ISBN and the Edition for each book required, as these are most important. Having the wrong edition of a book will have you running back to the book store (and good luck getting a refund)! The ISBN, which stands for International Standard Book Number, is a unique 10-digit to 13-digit number given to every book published, as identification, and is usually found on the back cover, near the bar code. To search for a book by ISBN, just type the 10 or 13 numbers into a book store’s search box, without dashes.

Finding a textbook online can save you a lot of money, if you do not wait until the last minute and purchase carefully. I am hesitant to buy from any place that I am unfamiliar with, so I usually stick with reputable merchants. Many bookstores offer used book prices, right next to the new book price. Many places have a “buy back” program so that you can get money back after you are finished using the book and some will even pay the shipping costs for you! If you plan to resell your book, remember to keep it in good condition, and be careful not to have any excessive highlighting or writing in the book. Happy Shopping!

Textbooks will always be important to every student in every level. College textbooks, on the other hand, are pricier than the typical grade school or high school books. College students need the right textbooks according to their field of study. Students in the field of science, engineering, business, and medical courses need the necessary reading material to gain knowledge in their craft.

College textbooks are very expensive these days and students have a hard time settling these expenses. So when the string gets short, it is about time to change perspectives and be open to other options.

If you are a student who is determined to graduate, you would gladly embrace positive ways to get you through college and keep you on the right track. Staying in libraries will definitely do you good, but of course, you cannot own their books; in as much as you want to cling to them if you still have the pressing need for them. These books are chained to the library and you are bounded by days.

Availing of used textbooks is a wise alternative to brush off the high costs of expensive textbooks. Since the book business has become an enterprise, little can be done to curb their ever-increasing costs. It is up to the student now to act on it.

When you buy the very same book titles in used conditions and you get them at cheaper prices, you will be able to save a few dollars. This is wise buying that can set you off with better decisions in the future of handling your finances. If you no longer have the need for these textbooks, do not let them gather dust on your shelves. It is better to sell them again and get your money back eventually.

If you want to know where to get secondhand textbooks, the Internet is a good source. The Internet has vast resources for your every used textbook needs. When you check for websites, there are certain domains to make your search easier. Classifying and separating particular subjects on books that you might need, such as math, physics, science, and more. This is book hunting the most comfortable way.

If you are the seller, you can post your college textbooks on these sites. You can list down the books that you want to sell. This way, you are not only earning, but also reaching out to those students who are constrained in budget. Anybody can get the best deals in finding used textbooks since you can easily compare prices here.

College professors suggest the books to use during his or her term. Once you learn of the books, get the ISBN code, and type it in the website selling used textbooks. You will most probably get the book you need at a much cheaper price. Just imagine the convenience this brings.

The next semester is fast approaching, with the need to purchase textbooks. There are several ways students can save money when buying textbooks. Online bookstores often sell used college textbooks. When buying a used textbook, it is important first to know as much as possible about the textbook. The following list of things to know will be helpful, especially to first time students.

You need to know the ISBN (International Standard Book Number). Textbook publishers release new editions of textbooks on a regular schedule. If you purchase the wrong textbook edition, the assignments and projects may not be the same as those the instructor assigns. The ISBN is different for each edition, so this is a must to know.

You need to know if the textbook has a CD or DVD with it. Often, you can find the textbook used at one of the popular online bookstores. If the textbook you need has a CD or other materials that you need, be sure to only purchase the used textbook if the seller specifically states that the ancillary materials are present. In the case of CDs and DVDs, it is best if the seller states that they are unopened. This way you know the original owner has not scratched it beyond use. Also, the CD may have a license that states only the first buyer may use it. It may have a one-time use activation code. Be careful of the descriptions, too. Acceptable usually means that the textbook is written in, highlighted, or is damaged in some way that does not preclude being able to read it. Like new and new descriptions are best.

You need to know the price at the campus bookstore. It does not help you to buy online just to find out that the book sells cheaper at the campus bookstore (though this seldom is the case). What might happen, though, is that the campus bookstore purchases the textbook from the publisher bundled with additional required materials, such as a student version of software used in the textbook. Often the bundled textbook and materials cost less than purchasing a used book and the required materials separately.

Order your textbooks from online bookstores well before class begins. Most college instructors are not sympathetic when you do not have the textbook you ordered but did not yet receive, especially when the campus bookstore still has copies available.

Do not purchase a used textbook hoping the answers to questions will be written in the book. Quite often, the answers are wrong, which will lower your grade. At any rate, the course does you no good if you do not learn the material. It is difficult to explain to prospective employers why you are not able to do a task if they know you received an A in the class that teaches the task. Using someone else’s answers is lazy, unethical, and immoral-and if you are caught doing so, could be grounds for dismissal from the college or university.

You could always purchase a used textbook from another student who has just completed the course. In this case, be sure to know that the textbook is the same one being used in your class. Even on the same campus, different instructors teaching the same class may use different textbooks. Also, especially in technical classes, the field changes so fast that textbooks seldom last for more than two semesters before being replaced with newer editions or even different textbooks produced by a different publisher.

If you are using Financial Aid to finance your education and purchase your textbooks, you will probably have to purchase your textbooks at the campus bookstore in order to have them in time for the first day of class. Financial Aid refunds are most often given to students far too late to use them to purchase textbooks for the semester in which the refund is received. If you want to purchase textbooks at a lower price, but must use Financial Aid monies, save back a portion of the refund for the following semester’s textbooks.

A college textbook purchase can set you back hundreds of dollars. You’ll learn 1 great place to look to avoid buying textbooks altogether. You may not know it, but you can often get textbooks for free. Learn this technique for saving money in college, and use it over and over again.

How to Take A Class - But Not Buy A Textbook

So many classes have expensive textbooks, and you probably want to save money for having fun, and maybe even eating while you go to college. Take a look at this strategy for to skip the bookstore and still get access to the books you need to pass.

The Study Lab

When I took an economics class as an undergrad, we had a lab to go to study for the class. A teaching assistant was there to answer any questions, with his own book. The lab had some great hours, but was often unoccupied. Those poor TA’s have hardly any company unless a test or big assignment comes up. You can be his or her very best student!

Simply go to the lab and use the book and ask questions, just like you should as an interested student. Let the lab assistant help you, and use their book while in the lab. Just think - you can skip the textbook in a class like this.

Bonus: You finished your assignment, and you avoided a college textbook purchase, but be sure your class actually has a study lab, a TA, and a book before you try this one. This strategy will even beat the prices at a used textbook sale.

The best part about school letting out is that we don’t have to pay for textbooks, and the worst part about school starting up is paying for textbooks. Why are textbooks so expensive? On my campus, we have two book stores: The university book store, and an independent, “off-campus” bookstore. I had a conversation with the manager of the independent book store, which happens to be right next to the business school.

He told me that even though we pay an arm and a leg for textbooks, if his establishment wasn’t present on our campus we would pay even more. It’s simple economics: if the official bookstore of the university was the only bookstore on campus, they can set their own price. The presence of competition (Campus Book & Supply) forces prices to drop for everybody. Thanks, CBS!

Their profit margins are within a few percentage points of each other.

Speaking of margins though (margin being Selling price minus costs), the bookstore I go to have profit margins per book of 50-60%!! Most any bookstore does. What this means is that if they buy a book for $50, they’ll sell it for $100-125.

Due to the nature of the industry, bookstores wouldn’t survive if they didn’t price similarly.

Paying so much for books stinks, I know. That’s why you have to budget and plan for these expenses.

But why do textbooks cost so much? Well,

$0.32 of every dollar goes to the publisher’s paper, printing and editorial costs. This amount includes all manufacturing costs from editing to paper costs to distribution, as well as storage, record-keeping, billing, publisher’s office, and employee’s salaries and benefits.

$.07 (after-tax) is publisher’s income. This is after-tax income from which the publisher pays for new product development, author advances, market research and dividends to stockholders.

$.11 goes to college store personnel. Store employees need paid too!
Every year students require various college textbooks for their classes, spending a small fortune to purchase them. High standards should be improved in the business deal of purchasing new and used books so that all students would benefit of improved methods of learning. In recent years, college bookstores have begun to lose their monopoly over the market, generating pronounced imbalances regarding the average costs of most study materials.

Thousands of students who will soon head off to college campuses nationwide are beginning to realize that it takes quite a bit of capital these days to buy textbooks. In the past two decades, college textbooks prices have increased considerably, at twice the rate of inflation. According to government estimates, students and their families have spent more than $6 billion on new and used textbooks over the period of the academic year 2003-2004. During 2002 and 2004, the average college student spent up to $900 a year for textbooks, around 3 percent more than in the last seven years. Recent studies have also revealed the fact that the average student nowadays spends about $100 on a single curriculum-oriented new book and about $65 on a similar used book.

Fortunately, there are various high-standard educational institutions that are currently striving to overcome such topical issues regarding the low affordability of curricular study materials. The University of Phoenix for instance, has corrected such problems by modifying the general curriculum and preparing a lighter course load for attending students. By replacing most traditional textbooks with e-books, the University of Phoenix has become the first “textbook-less” college in the country.

Highly skilled students joining selected programs nowadays benefit for Microsoft’s e-book reader software. However, in order to obtain unlimited access to interactive materials and up-to-date texts online, students still have to pay a per-course fee. In present, the University of Phoenix has almost 95,500 students at more than 100 locations across the country, currently striving to integrate all students in the e-book-oriented study program.

In order to achieve a better position on the market, the great majority of booksellers have recently started to sell textbooks at a considerable discount off the cover price. Furthermore, special areas have been created in order to improve the selling of textbooks on the Internet. Another great source for college books are the online used bookstores, which help students find the textbooks of their interest at considerably lower prices.

Students must be very careful when closing a deal on the Web. Considering the fact that textbook prices greatly vary on the Internet, students are advised to closely analyze all possible alternatives before choosing a certain bookseller over another. It is important to note that the purchase price should not be the only considered aspect when buying textbooks online; students should also factor in shipping costs and delivery time before deciding upon buying their desired textbooks on the Internet.

In order to fight the high cost of college textbooks you should double-check for the correct 10-digit International Standard Book Number, or ISBN. This number is situated above the bar code on the textbook’s back cover or title page. When you are purchasing online you should check for the ISBN along with the book title, author and edition.

If you simply can’t afford new textbooks, you should consider purchasing used textbooks, as they are considerably less expensive than their new counterparts. You can purchase a used textbook at about 75 percent of the retail price of a new textbook. Prices vary anywhere from $10 to $80, with an approximate average of $40. Due to the fact that used books are a scarce and limited resource, often being sold out by the beginning of the school year, students may need to shop early in order to obtain their required used books. In spite of this fact, used textbooks are still a reliable, cost-effective alternative to new textbooks, allowing students to spend less money for their education.

but they may have to spend a lot of time sifting through the bookstore looking for used textbooks they can afford. Fortunately, a better alternative can be found through websites dedicated to selling used and new college textbooks.

How do these websites work? Usually, there are two ways. The first way involves a company buying used college books from students or other websites. From there, they sell the textbooks back to students who are in need of them. No one else is involved in the transaction, making these types of sites the most convenient to use.

The second method involves making use of marketplaces, where students can sell used college textbooks to one another. Now, this is not as convenient as the first method, but it can provide students with much better deals. A college textbook that normally costs $100 could probably be acquired for $30 or less through these marketplaces. Why? Well, students are not trying to return as much of a profit as a company. Getting rid of it at any price is still helpful.

Then there are websites that offer both alternatives. These are usually the best to use, because they are basically a one-stop shopping solution. Plus, sometimes these types of stores may even have new college textbooks they can sell. True, the new college textbooks would be more expensive than the used ones, but they are still cheaper than what could be found at a university bookstore.

Either way, once students are finished with their books, they can always sell them back to get quick cash. It doesn’t even matter where the books were originally bought. Just as long as they are in relatively decent condition, most sites will gladly buy them.

There are several different ways of obtaining these. You can purchase both new and used nursing textbooks online from various publishers directly. This may add up to some substantial savings overall. You can also find some of the books offered used online on E bay or Amazon.com. There will also be private individuals who will offer these on sites dedicated to nursing textbook sales.

Your local colleges will have campus bookstores that will provide you with yet another way of obtaining the nursing textbooks that you need. Just make sure that the book itself is in fairly good condition because you will be using them often throughout your nursing school classes.

Nursing books are a necessity for a successful education and you will be using many of them during your own stint at nursing school. Some of the larger bookstores at the malls have whole sections that are devoted to nursing books and materials.

If you go by a college campus and check the bulletin boards you will find a number of nursing books for sale.
You can always return the used nursing textbooks to the bookstores and sell them back when you are finished with them or you can offer them for sale to other incoming students. Keep in mind that it is a good idea to keep some of these books to build your own nursing reference library that you can continue using throughout your nursing career.

Have you ever found yourself visiting half.com, textbooks.com, etc., for a required textbook only to find that the ISBN does not exist? If you are unfamiliar with custom version textbooks, you may think that the professor made an error or that the textbook is not available yet.

Many textbook publishers are giving professors the option to modify a textbook by adding a chapters, experiments, and labs. These textbooks are given a unique ISBN and a unique custom version title, for example, English Literature, Custom Version for New York Community College.

If you have not already guessed, custom textbooks carry additional cost that standard textbooks do not. The cost varies from publisher to publisher, but the standard cost seems to start at about $2.00 plus up to an additional 5% for each experiment or lab the professor adds in the book. Most publishers require a minimum of 12 experiments.

A custom textbook can cost a student an additional 24 to 35 dollars or more depending on the publisher’s cost and the amount of material being added. It may cost even more if the professor adds a chapter to the book.

But there is also a positive side to custom textbooks. For the additional cost, students receive the standard textbook along with the materials the professor added. In the classroom, a personal touch is added to the curriculum as professors are likely to include in the text a few case studies that are meaningful to the students and to the community.

Custom textbooks are also more fluid. How many publishers kick themselves after publishing and printing a textbook about Earth Science only days before a new breakthrough in the field is released? Custom textbooks give professors the opportunity to add the latest developments and discoveries to the textbook.

When you think about it, you may conclude that more value should result in more cost. In general, that is true, but what ever happened to professors uploading case studies onto the class website or handing it out to students during class? With the steadily increasing cost of college, I think students need a break.

Also, what happens to the buyback value of the textbook? Just like many students today, I can remember relying on buyback cash to cover other expenses. With a custom textbook, the demand is most likely going to be limited only to a particular school, or in extreme cases, to a particular class.

A college education these days do not come cheap. Colleges and universities are constantly striving to establish themselves in the academic world and have to be unique in order to be noticed. Whether it is extraordinary campus facilities, or a wide range in courses or experienced faculty, colleges try to outdo each other to attract students. Of course all the costs of development and infrastructure filter down to students in the form of fees. Additionally, students have to bear the cost of buying college textbooks as well. Not surprising then, that many students have come up with cost-effective methods that can help them save every penny that they can which can be better used elsewhere.

A couple of decades ago, the only choice a college student may have had for buying college textbooks would have been the campus bookstore and a few exclusive bookstores in and around the campus catering exclusively to students. However, book retailing is now big business with a number of players establishing retail stores offering books across a wide variety of segments. In spite of having a better variety of resources buying college textbooks for most students is still quite a drain on finances. One cannot count on college libraries alone as they often have limited number of books catering to a large number of borrowers. Plus it can be quite inconvenient if the library does not lend books and requires that students only refer to them in the library itself.

Books are not getting any cheaper either and very few would probably have the wherewithal of buying college textbooks anew every year. All these problems faced by college students has encouraged many of them to find more cost-effective alternatives to buying new books. Some may opt to buy books from those who have just graduated and have no use anymore for their college textbooks. This helps both parties save some money. These days there are enough online bookstores, which offer interesting options that may help you in buying college textbooks at reasonable prices. Some of them even allow you to rent the books for a specific period, which more or less works like a library service, so you don’t really have to buy a book and think of ways of disposing it and getting at least part of your money back later.

If renting works out expensive, then you could try online bookstores, which offer a buy back option. You not only get the books you need for a considerably lower price than the original, but you also have the option of selling it back to the same bookstore. Buying college textbooks is something no student can bypass, as it is very unlikely that you could graduate by just attending lectures and relying on notes and tutorials given out by the professors. College education requires a lot of investment, in terms of time, effort and money. At least now you have the option of economizing on at least one of them.
